Description
Typical dark dubbel style abbey beer from the abbey of the phoenix, 6.5%.
Just north of Brussels stands an imposing Norbertine Abbey founded by St Norbert himself in the eleventh century known as Grimbergen. The Abbey has been famously sacked four times and each time risen again, just like the phoenix, reproduced from a stained glass window to adorn the bottle labels.
Grimbergen Dubbel imitates a trappist Dubbel and is owned by Belgian brewing giants Maes who are parented by Scottish & Newcastle. The beer is dark red with a sweet candy sugar taste that coats the palate and dominates the taste buds. Grimbergen Dubbel is not a subtle beer and often suggests a large quality armagnac to the drinker. Forest fruits are also present in the flavours. A good place to start on dark Belgian beers, smooth rich and tasty.
