Description
5.4%
Making wheat beer for six generations, the Schneider family are the one of Munich's most established brewing families and this beer, 5.4%abv, hints at why.
Dark and malty for a wheat beer with a lot of spice this is an engaging and moreish beer. Schneider are credited for resurrecting this beer style from its extinction in the late 1800's and brew on a site that dates back to the seventeenth century.
The Schneider family began brewing in central Munich by royal appointment before
moving to a site on the Danube.
G. Schneider & Sohn is a Bavarian brewery company founded in 1872 by Georg Schneider I and his son of the same name, after they acquired the
Weisses Brauhaus
in
Munich
, the oldest
wheat beer
brewery in the city. In 1927 the owners, who to this day are descendants of Georg Schneider I, expanded their brewing operations into Kelheim and
Straubing
.
After the breweries in Munich were destroyed in 1944 by bombing, the entire production was relocated to Kelheim.
Schneider Weisse Original is an Amber-mahogany hefeweizen wheat beer (5.4% ABV), it is a yeasty, clove like hefeweizen, with tons of herbal flavours, it is top fermented like an ale, with banana and vanilla present, an absolute winner. Best Seller.
Darker than the usual weissebier, big aroma of banana bread and hints of yeast and clove. Phenolic character is expressive with clove and a slight medicinal flavour that cuts right through the wheat. This same phenolic character keeps its bite right to the end
.
On the palate it is quite spritzy, yet smooth and subtly spicy, with complex light fruit - apples, lemons, oranges, bananas and melons, with a pear-drop estery hint. It is fairly dry, but not especially bitter. Hops are discernible when the head is tasted, but are not a major feature of the palate. Finish is slightly sweeter and again quite malty, with the light, lemon-zesty fruit lingering in a smoothly cloying aftertaste. Overall this beer's classic status is well-deserved - it is smooth, complex and refreshing, with a hidden strength.
This beer pairs really well with german cuisine, poultry, fish and seafood – it also go’s great with cheeses such as edam and feta.
50cl bottle.
