Clear  Bavarian wheat beer from the official oldest brewery in the world,.

Many wheat beer brewers have introduced a kristal weisse, a wheat beer filtered to improve its cosmetic value and lighten the heavy load a wheat beer carries. None are clearer than the Weihenstaphaner Kristall filtered using a secret method.

As the name suggests, the Kristall is a crystal-clear, filtered wheat beer that's free of yeast. It's a refreshingly effervescent brew, with flavours that are reminiscent of banana and tropical fruits, and was named Champion Specialty Beer at the 2003 Australian International Beer Awards. Brewed by The Weihenstephan ("Sacred Stephen") Brewery, which is the oldest operating brewery in the world.

Lighter and more zesty than a typical wheat beer, this beer is still heavier than it looks and goes down like a spritzy real ale not a lager.

Pours a clear, sparkling gold colour with a massive head. The fruity aromas are huge – banana, banana, banana – with hints of clove and vanilla. Its flavours explode across your palate; again masses of banana flavours, with hints of tropical fruit, some mild malt and clove.

Weihenstaphan or Sacred Steven have had an on site monastery since 725 and have been brewing since at least 1040, the monastery is still there along with a very modern style brewery and a yeast library!

In 1040, the Benedictine monastery overlooking the town of Freising, in Germany, was granted the right to brew. It has also been established that the Benedictine monks had already brewed their own beer much earlier than this. Even as early as 768a hops garden was founded in the grounds of the monastery, the harvest of which was certainly brewed in the monastery; which, incidentally, also means that beer made with hops, as we know it today, came into being at Weihenstephan.

The reputation of the Weihenstephan brewers as true masters of their craft has grown in strength over the centuries, and today’s modern commercial brewery – and the world’s best known University of Brewing – occupy the former monastery buildings. The Weihenstephan Brewery maintains close links with the University. In the brewery, students from around the world are let into the secrets of the Bavarian art of brewing. Many of the world’s best brewers have been trained here and many breweries draw their yeasts from the famous Weihenstephan yeast library. Weihenstephan combines hundreds of years of brewing experience with the most up to date brewing technology and innovation.

This beer pairs very well with fish, seafood and light dishes.
